Each year, Cannon Beach plays host to amazing master builders and individuals for Sandcastle Day. This year marks its 49th anniversary! In 1964, the town of Cannon Beach was recovering from a major tsunami triggered by a 9.2 earthquake centered in Anchorage, Alaska. The tsunami generated by the Good Friday Quake, as it is known, decimated buildings on the north end, washed away the Ecola Creek Bridge and generally destroyed the coastline. As a result, Cannon Beach experienced a decline in tourism, a staple for this small town’s economy. Margaret Atherton, Billie Grant and Marion Crowell brought a simple idea to full fruition under the watchful eye of Haystack Rock in June of 1964. Sandcastle Day was a huge success for tourism and town morale.
Today, Sandcastle Day is bigger and better than ever, attracting as many as 10,000 people. In anticipation of the event, beautiful posters are made and available for purchase. The posters are often made by local artists. Don’t let the crowd deter you from attending this marvelous event. It’s well worth it. You’ll see the tools of the trade such as boards, buckets, trowels, straws and more, learn sand-sculpting techniques, enjoy good food and listen to music. Throughout the day, you’ll witness primitive mounds of sand turn into magnificent creations. I am always amazed at what can be crafted from grains of sand. ⚓
